In collaboration with MQS, we recently had the privilege of working on a pole barn project, where we undertook the crucial task of preparing the site for construction. Our team meticulously measured, staked out the space, and executed a series of essential earthwork steps to create a stable foundation for the pole barn. 1. Precise Measurements and Staking Out
The first step in any earthwork project is accurate measurements and staking out the designated area. Our experienced team worked closely with MQS and carefully measured the space for the pole barn. By precisely staking out the boundaries and dimensions, we ensured that subsequent steps would align with the project's requirements.
2. Removing Debris and Grading the Ground
To create a level and stable surface for the pole barn, we began by removing any unwanted organic material, such as duff and vegetation. By clearing the area, we eliminated potential sources of future issues, such as uneven settling or moisture retention. We then meticulously graded the ground to ensure a level base, promoting structural integrity and proper water drainage.
3. Underlayment for Stability
To further enhance the stability of the ground, we laid underlayment materials. Underlayment acts as a barrier between the native soil and the subsequent layers, preventing sinking and promoting even load distribution. This essential step ensures that the weight of the pole barn and any potential heavy equipment will be properly supported, and the gravel material will not be allowed to sink into the top existing top soil.
4. Creating a Solid Base with Gravel
To establish a strong foundation, we employed a layered gravel approach. We spread gravel in reducing sizes, starting with larger stones as the base, followed by medium-sized gravel, and finishing with clean chips. This layering technique creates a compact and well-draining base, capable of withstanding heavy loads and minimizing the risk of shifting or settling.
5. Sloping and Drainage Considerations
To protect the concrete floor of the pole barn from potential water damage, we carefully graded the surrounding area. By creating a slope away from the concrete, any rainwater or melting snow will be directed away from the building, preventing moisture-related issues. Additionally, the graded material around the base holds the gravel in place, offering added stability and reducing the risk of erosion.
6. Extending the Driveway for Convenience
As part of the project, we extended the existing driveway to allow for direct access to the future shop. This enhancement not only improves convenience but also enhances the overall functionality of the pole barn. By seamlessly integrating the extended driveway with the earthwork process, we create a cohesive and well-designed space.
